Thread: Yellowstone Compound

I have been experimenting with this compound, and I find it fascinating. I am asking for help in gathering any data about it. I have been unable to find any information that will give me its atomic structure.

What I can tell you is that it has magical honing properties.

I have Paki's (that were bought years ago to have something to learn to hone on) that now cut as cleanly as my best shavers.

Don't take this the wrong way. No disrespect meant.

Magic? I like magic. The problem is paki's are garbage. we all know that. Maybe you have gotten a method to hone them up however the grinding and heat treatment and quality of steel would keep them from retaining an edge for any period of time.

Now if you have come up with a magic process to make a Paki shave like a Puma we are all ears here. Lets see some pics. Send some to a honemeister for review. You could make a lot of money doing this.

Sorry but I can't help you with the honing compound. I have some rouge which is yellow designed for very soft metals like copper and plastics but I don't think its the same as what you have.

I am well aware of the sentiment towards, and the quality of Pakistani razors. I have posted my regards for them on this board before. Therein lies a portion of my excitement about the honing compound.

On the woodworkingforums they say ts finer than ChrOx and faster even.

It is very fast, and smooooth! What it does to my Friodurs is nothing short of amazing. I just cant get any technical info on it. I have seen one short mention in a woodworking forum that says it is .3 microns. I can find nothing that gives its composition.

How does it compare to 0.25 micron diamond spray (if you've used it) ? Smoother?

Are you using it on a pasted strop? Hanging or paddle? Leather or balsa/etc?

Hmmmmm, my local woodcraft carries it and has it in stock. Only $11.50 and I can have it tomorrow, hmmmm. I do have some extra balsa wood paddles just waiting for some new paste to try. Looks as if I'll be giving this a whirl tomorrow.

I have .25 diamond paste on a seperate strop. This cuts as quickly as diamond but is not nearly as harsh. I strop using SRD's web strop. A dry surface works best.

Great news. I can't wait to give this stuff a go. It's cheap and convenient, so why not?

I have one balsa wood paddle with chromium oxide and another with karakoup1's < 0.5 micron red paste from the classifieds. I wonder how this stuff compares to the red stuff? I'm curious to find out.

Think of it as a .25 CrOx even though it is not, that is what it performs like...

I can't find the link I was looking for but for some reason I was always under the impression that this was cerium (sp*) oxide....

I never used much of it because I could not ever find the pure powdered form of it.... Let us know if you find it in powder PLEASE....
