Thread: Making a new honing stone...

Well, i have been inspired by Sham's recent aquisition, of a yellow Jasper honing stone, (at least we think that's what it is...,) and have decided to play around with making one of my own, (for sh*ts and giggles.)

So, ive bought this combination red/yellow jasper rock...its the purest i could find so far and when i get it, i'll take it to a local stone cutter. I bought some other Jasper samples for testing as well.

Im just doing this for fun and hope there may be some honing capacity to it, when im done...but i will be keeping my expectations low. One thing i do continue to consider, is the information i was reading about, awhile back, about how the Vikings used to highly prize their Jasper hones as well as use them as important trade items...whether these will work for razors, we will see.

I wish you luck with that. The color in the stone is so beautiful it is almost a shame to cut it. Then again it is going for a good cause and will no doubt be a beauty when it is lapped and ready to go.

Yeah, i agree.
It does seem like a shame to cut, given its beauty...but im just trying to visualize it, perfectly symetrically cut, nestled in a nice oak honing holder. Hopefully, that will lessen the pain. Oh...and it is partially your guys and gals faults, im out murdering stones now.

Great idea and experiment. please let us know the result. After you done we can compare them to each other too. lets see what happens. gl

I fairly certain, with this size of stone, i should be able to have two hones made out of it...if its worth it, ill send ya one, at some point to compare, if ya like.

Been googling a lot but could not find anything that size,
otherwise I would try that as well.
Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

Well,
I also got some petrified wood...interesting graining, to see what that looks like and feels like.

Incidentally, i am going to purchase a nice, digital microscope on sunday to see what this stuff looks like up close.

I think im becoming a stone freak or something...Geez!

Ha! Great minds think alike. My wife and I have an acquaintance here in Modena who owns a crystal and rock store. Yesterday, I went and ordered a piece of yellow jasper in the shape of a bar about 6 inches by 2 (it is available already cut into bars). I'll post of a picture of it (if he comes through) and even order more if anyone's interested.
