    Default Some hones and stones

    Some stuff iv'e accumulated over the yrs.
    Hopefully some of it will help out in my attempt to get started.

    Guess so!
    Looks like a coticule, the yellow one on the left of the upper picture.

    I didnt know what they were till recently Olivia,bought them at garage sales for under a dollar.
    I also have a pretty good holder for them and a few more stones

    +1 on the blue/ yellow coticule combination hone. Looks like 8X2 inches and possibly a natural combination stone, too! Can you tell I don't like coticules much?

    The last 2 pic's are very interesting.

    Is that modified saw horse a sharpeniing stand? If so what do you sharpen on it.

    The last picture....are those natural japanese stones or..?

    Default Stone use

    I have been restoring Japanese swords for about 27 yrs.I use the synthetic stones for foundation polish and the natural for finishing.The traditional position is more of a squat on a very short stool,pad or block with cushion,barefoot,holding an "S" shaped wood clamp with your foot,holding or clamping a stone onto a wood block in front of you.This style rig is more geared to my hight(6')and the fact that i didnt start polishing im my teens like some Japanese apprentices.
