Thread: Old blade

Recently i got a wedge blade and i am sure it has been sharpened by some machine?
has anyone had similar problems?
why i think so.when you put the blade flat to the hone(hone is lapped) back of the blade and end of the bevel(toward to back) touch to the hone . cutting Edge is way on the air?
This makes me taping will not do so much differences?
any thoughts?

I've seen razors that have been sharpened on a kitchen knife sharpener and that device destroyed the edge. it meant having to totally redo the bevel and then some. So do you think that is the case or was it some other device like a powered sander or something?

Razor is at least 100 years old. it may be that is the case but edge wasn't in bad shape except wasn't touching the hone . Almost 1/16 off the surface may be more.

Although I don't have proof yet I am a firm believer that the old wedges were honed in a different mannor than we are currently using. I've been looking for a good razor to check the angle on and it sounds like you may have a good one to check. Can you measure the angle on the bevel before you hone it and post or PM me the results? If you put a protractor on the blade from spine to bevel and them measure the bevel angle from there it would be good. I would also need the included angle taken from the edge to the spine which would measure the included angle (one side to the other. Lastly, the thickness of the spine and the height of the blade i.e. 7/8s or what ever it is. If the blade has a smile you may need to measure the angles at several points. Can you post any pics? This is a great find and may be a missing link!!

I was thinking the same thing.....but it might just be that it was simply honed freehand like a knife, although I've never heard of anyone doing this.

If it's got an actual bevel then some kid probably thought it was a knife.

I'd say get it reground if it's still big enough.

Send us a pic please, that will be a good starting point.
From your description I would guess that it has a pronounced "smile" shape to the edge of the blade. But your description also suggests a severe rounding to the edge. I have seen that before on W&B wedge type razors.
I think both of the suggested explanations may have merit... a very slack strop and/or the razor was sharpened like a knife with the spine raised off the hone. In either case the solution is the recreation of the bevel which will require a lot of work.
