Thread: A faked up 1700's French razor?

This looks extremely suspicious to me.

To my eye, that's an 1880's-1910 Sheffield blade with the tail cut off pinned into a quickly thrown-together set of scales. It looks like that end cap is likely to fall off.

And how does the seller know that's 18k gold?

Obviously it was convincing enough for someone...

The seller didn't even describe whatever is inscribed on the tang - it doesn't look like anything I'd want to spend money on. The scales look like they were put on upside down. Very strange looking caboodle there

I would call that junk!..no way can that take an edge as is..so its worth maybe $10

I've seen either this razor or a similar one here on SRP somewhere. If I remember right, the view was that it was legit. I'll have to spend some time searching.

I'm kinda gobsmacked at his testing result. GOLD WASHERS?!

Still, I am pretty sure that the blade isn't original... But the fact that it's real gold on the end cap and the washers suggests that is something special.

I formally retract my faked up description!

how could I have forgotten

The scales dates from the first french Empire aerea 1800 1815, the blade could be a later adjonction, in France the "no tail" razors were made until 1870 or so, it's called "rasoir de perruquier".
