    Default Sterilizing/Disinfecting Used Raors

    Hi all,

I am new to straights in general and was wondering about the proper technique for ensuring that you don't get anything nasty from a used razor.

My first razor is a brand-spanking new TI made of Sheffield steel. But I am now on the hunt for more modestly priced razors to begin a rotation. That being said I won the following razor:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...7586&rd=1&rd=1

Any comments? I figure that even if it turns out to be a POS that I can use it to practice honing.

So, assuming that I can get this puppy to a shavable edge, what do I need to do to keep from getting hep. c or something else nasty?

    Thanks,
    Mike

I use Bleach Free Clorox Wipes and wipe them real good then rinse right away and wipe with 100% Grain Alcohol which is Everclear some good ol white lightning. Check with others though before using Real Clorox Some don't use it but I know it kills AIDS. Not sure the Bleach Free Clorox Wipes kill HIV but HIV needs a host to live so I don't think HIV or AIDS Can live very long on steel or plastic, but wood I'm not sure.

Hot, soapy water works just fine. I've handled, and shaved with, literally hundreds of ebay razors, and never had a problem. Not many germs can survive on washed steel. Some folks make waaaaaaaay too big a deal out of sterilizing razors. Wash them, dry them, and let them lay open in the air. That'll take care of 99.999999999% of anything that'll hurt you.

a solution of 10% bleach is all that is needed to kill any of the organisms you might find on a blade, remember this is a razor blade and it does draw blood
    Hepatitis C/B
    Hiv
are the two we should worry about.
dont know what effect this solution might have on carbon steel but if you wash it off after a few seconds i would think there would be no lasting effect.
also make sure you wash off any chunks from someones face you might find!

Bleach will corrode carbon steel so I stopped using it. These days I just give the razors a good rag scrubbing with Lysol to destroy the microorganizms and remove host mediums. No noticeable damage of the steel so far.

How would the steel react to something like Borax or Sodium Carbonate?

Heads up trolls there are some more modern threads dealing with sterilization.

I have to take on this quote though
I've handled, and shaved with, literally hundreds of ebay razors, and never had a problem.
Well unless your a regular blood doner and getting tested often you might not know you had a problem or not. I've handled literally hundreds of women but I also know it only takes one to do me in.

Read more, do what you can.
