Thread: Can i use shaving cream

like i said in a previous thread i have purchased a dovo best quality straight razor and a two inch strap and spent enough money for now i am sure that in the future i will buy the lathering soaps and brush deal but will i get by for now with regular shaving cream? and recomendations on brands and sites with good deals on good quality soaps and such thanks

The short answer is, yes, but you shouldn't.

Canned shave goop is formulated for use with multi-blade cartridge razors. Using it with a straight will almost certainly have a negative impact on your shave.


A better option while saving up for good gear, would be to head over to your nearest walmart, and pick up one of their wet shaving sets. You can get a nice looking bowl, a functional boar bristle brush, and a cake of cheap shave soap in a boxed set for about $10, and it will probably last as long as $10 worth of canned shave goo.

+1 On that. I have used either Williams, walmart. or if you can find it Burma shave . I just saw a Burma shave mug soap and brush for 8.50 . they will do better with a str8 razor.

As already said, even an inexpensive soap & brush will be better than canned stuff. Some of the cheap one's are even good! I can understand that you don't wan't to spend any more right now, but consider it. If you do end up making do with what you already have, & you're struggling with the comfort of the shave, try what's been suggested.

Let me add one thing, the canned stuff is not shaving cream at all, the canned stuff is called Shave Foam and its not cream at all and there is a big difference between the two.

Tabac is approximately 12 and for 13 you can get brush . this will last at least 6 months.

most walmarts carry the van der hagen set and individual pieces. set costs about 8 and works well. you can get a nice shaving soap from the vendors here or on ebay and a brush also. i think you will be much happier as the other members above have already said

Our WalMart and I think all WalMarts have the VanDerhagen soaps and brush kits. They are inexpensive and will work fine until you decide to move up.
At times the classifieds will have a good deal on brushes and soaps also.

If you want to get a cheap brush/soap combo, there's some Col. Conk soaps going cheap in the classifieds at the moment (about $3.50 a puck, IIRC), and you can get a good starter badger brush off Amazon.com for around $15 (the Tweezerman brush - cheap but works well, and it's proper badger too).

Williams is good cheap soap or get a generic glycerin soap for a buck fifty. The advantage of getting a cheap badger or boar brush, is it does not go to waste if you get an expensive one later on since you can use it for your travel one in the future. When you have the money get a nice badger brush it makes for a much better shave anyway.
