    Default First Time

    Hello All,

I have a question about stropping. I acquired a Gold Dollar SR and a Philly strop for Christmas. Today I tried it out for the first time. I noticed as I was stropping that tiny pieces of the leather were coming off the stop and onto the razor; Is this normal? Also, even though I tired very hard...i did put a couple of small nicks in the strop. Is there any way I can smooth them out?

Thanks in advance for all the help! I am looking forward to starting this journey...... with all of your help!

    Hi,

I think pictures would be helpful. You are not by any chance stropping with the edge leading? Proper stropping is explained here: Razor stropping - Straight Razor Place Wiki. Strop treatment and repair - Straight Razor Place Wiki has some tips for getting your strop smooth and even again.

    Good luck.

Welcome, there's an article in the Wiki, Strop treatment and repair that's been useful to me. Small nicks can also be gently rubbed away with a pumice stone. I've never had a Philly so can't say if this is normal or not. If I understand right they're just small flecks already on the leather when you got the strop, if so I'd think a simple rubbing with the hand should be sufficient to get rid of them but others may well have more to say on the matter.

If you were stropping with the edge of the razor leading the stroke , I think your razor needs to be re-honed , and you may need a new strop .
