Thread: New To SRP

Dunno, the leather was different and worked better, more like the old cordovan strops. Of the SRD strops I have the latigo, premium1 and premium4, and I've used premium1 the most (premium 4 is relatively new for me, even though I must've gotten one of the very first ones). If you don't mind spending the extra money for the premiums, I'd say either one of them, if not, the latigo works quite well too, but it takes time to break in.
I also find that the poly webbing works unexpectedly well. As far as function is concerned I think it's better than the fabric on the illinois strops, but it has weird feedback at first - like when I drive on the metal bridge by my house. It mellows with use though and feels more like a normal fabric.

Has anyone bought an extra razor for the propose and if so
Does it have to be an identical match to the first one?

Thoughts on having multiple razors?

It's a sensible idea. It also gives you a razor to use when you send your "daily shaver" out to be honed. They don't have to be identical, but they both have to be decent razors.

You must remember that this website caters to people with this credo:

. . . You can never have too many razors.

my plan is prolly to go ahead and get the cheepest strop from SRD in a set with the Dovo 6/8 black
just becuase it sounds like after reading more on SRP that i will nick or gash the 1st strop anyways.

That being said i almost cant imagine i would do that because at this point i have a great respect for the sharpness of the razor
and dont plan on doing anything overly fast or careless with it. and honestly it just dosent look that complicated if you take your time and
consentrate on the task at hand.

Members feel free to straighten out my thinking for me tho! by all means I still have never delt with any of this equipment.

I had the same feeling with the strop I have. It now is sporting a half dozen or so small nicks that I have sanded out. I thought I was being really careful and paying attention to what I was doing. I don't nick it anymore (knock on wood) but I had to learn the hard way as always.

If you don't nick it at all that is great, if you do nick it you learn how to repair a strop. As long as you don't cut it in half you should be fine.

wow, you are starting this out right! I should have been more deliberate and started like you did with all the essentials instead of even wasting time with my shavette and ghetto supplies. as far as strops go, get what you like, I use a latigo strop but would love to try horsehide, I also love the looks of the Illinois strops, I may make one that looks the same, anyhow good luck.

I kept a straight face all the way to the line "thoughts on having multiple razors?", that's when I shot tea out of my nose.

If you stick around you'll find numerous threads where the multiple razor issue is raised and discussed, but the short story is one razor is all one should need. Two is a fair number as you'll have a spare when your main blade is out for honing or disaster strikes and it's out to be fixed.

Personally I don't think anyone in the forum has stopped at two, or ten for that matter. Some of us make a point to go out on weekends scouting for estate sales, flea markets and so on to see if we score a razor or two. I speak only for myself, but I don't need another razor. If I lived to be 150 I wouldn't need more razors.

I just want them. I want them all.

Wow, nice start

I am also starting out and I went for a $25 straight from the classifieds section on one of the shaving forums and a Poor Man's Strop Kit from WhippedDog.com to get me rolling. I figure to learn with that razor and strop as, if they get beat up, it doesn't hurt as much. I also picked up a second straight from the classifieds section here that was a bit more expensive because I just simply liked the look and the blade. I am a fan of dark wood and this was a nicely restored blade with an ebony handle. Eventually, like many here, I plan to have a few different straights to rotate, but for the moment I am going to concentrate on learning to use them instead of acquiring them, which is hard to do because those shiny new razors on Lynn's site look very tempting!

Anyway, judging by what you've put together to start, you are going to have a good time. I look forward to seeing your progress.
