Default preparing back side of strop

I have an Illinois no. 127 strop and would like to use the back side for an abrasive paste. It is not, however, smooth and dyed like the front side. It is rough and not a really soft nap but a rather hard one. What if any preparation must I apply before I can add an abrasive paste to it? Thanks.

You can try knocking down the nap some with some 600 and 1000 grit sandpaper to try to smooth it over some. Use it lightly. Make sure you get all the sandpaper particle off the strop. Wiping with a wet miracle cloth helps and then let dry. I also try to use a light brush after it has dried. Then you should be ready for your paste. Put the paste on very light as well. You don't want to cake it on. Let it thoroughly dry and then you should be set.

    Have fun.
