Thread: Ingrown hairs

I've been using a straight for about a month and a half now. Ive been using my very first straight which is a dovo shavette. The reason I was so inspired to switch was because of all the ingrown hairs on my neck I was getting with my mach 3. I have not had much issue with ingrown hairs on my neck since switching to the shavette but have started to get them on my cheeks and jaw line. I'm using the art of shaving product line including their pre shave oil, lather, and after shave. The gentleman at the store told me that I was most likely having the ingrown hairs on my neck because of the product used in my prior shaving life. Any ideas on why this is happening? Is it possibly their product not working with my skin? Thanks in advance

I've never experienced an in-grown hair with any shaving utensil from cartridges through DEs to SRs.

I had a nightmare last night that all my whiskers turned into in-grown hairs, and I could never shave again.

Tough Beard

I get hammered by a member here after he says it's all good, which still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but it's never-the-less a good read and comes down to controlling heavy beard growth and ingrown hairs. This might help you.

I went to "tough beard" and since I don't generally have trouble with ingrowns, I was too lazy to read it all, so if this was already covered, my apologies.
The times I have had problems with ingrown whiskers were when changing from one medium to another, i.e. de or safety to an electric, or vice versa or when I begin to shave an area in a direction direction or manner than usual. It seems that how the whisker is cut and at what depth causes it to ingrow. I've found, at least for my face, that it adjusts and heals after a period if I keep the shave the same. Consistency seems to eventually solve the problem.
Also read over there about feeling stumble during and right at the end of the shave and then after the skin has relaxed it feels BBS. That's my experience and after realizing that, it cut down on a lot of unnecessary razor burn trying to get it completely smooth during the shave. I'm not saying a poor shave will turn smooth, but a good shave will improve a short time after. If your problem is a skin condition then this was probably of no help, but maybe to some it will be.

May I suggest that you go to the "Shaving" forum and first search for "ingrown". Then if you cannot find a good answer then post this question in that forum.

Are the bumps on your jaw and cheeks actual ingrowns, or are they zits?

99% of the time ingrowns are caused by shaving too closely, usually coupled with too much pressure as well. They can be cured by cutting out ATG passes or excessive shaving over problem areas. Good beard prep will help as well.

If the bumps are whiteheads only it is more likely due to the products you use (over greasing your skin), possibly shaving with too much pressure as well.

Im sure they are not zits because I can eventually get a hair out of them. I will take a read through the above links. I have been reading a lot on the forum about the different after shaves that I would like to try out. I tried searching the fourm for info on this but couldn't find much info. Thanks for all the help!
