Simpson's Commodore X3 Best Badger "Summer Coat Edition"
As some of you may have noticed, I am a great fan of The Different Scent's in Berlin. It is a little shop which is about a five minutes's walk from my home. It also puts the shops around Germyn Street to shame in terms of customer care, selection, and pricing. That said, even the good guys at TDS cannot avoid receiving faulty kit. And this brush turned out to be a complete failure. It all began when my father-in-law wanted a new brush...
Craftsmanship: Long story short: abysmal. Maybe some people rejoice in receiving shoddy stickers on their brushes. We do not. Luckily, you do not need to peel them off, they do that by themselves. This particular brush developed a balding problem at day one. Despite the fabled craftsmanship of a group of geriatric English gentlemen, it shed hairs like mad. When informed about this fact, Simpson went AWOL. Three months down the road, my father-in-law simply kept his replacement Rooney brush, and has been happy ever since.
Price: We are looking at a best badger brush here. This one went for over €80, and that is clearly too much. It does look, and feel, nice, though. But it certainly does not inspire my awe.
Lather Making Ability: If you want Überlather, go for a super badger. It does make lather, obviously, but in an uneventful way.
Tip Softness: Even though it is a best badger, it could have a lot softer tips. It has a somewhat scratchy feeling I do not overly enjoy.
Bristle Stiffness: It was bought to massage lather into a wire beard, and it does that very well.
Knot Density: Diminishing. Even if it were not, Thäter brushes are denser.
Overall impression: Sheds hair like a dog. Average performance. God awful consumer service by Simpson. I shall certainly get a Thäter next, as it delivers much better value for money.
