I was just leaving the clan’s ranch when Post Mistress Halfwitte came up to deliver the mail and she said hold on I have a package for you. She retrieved this box that was all torn and mangled with the interior contents visible and starting to spill out. I told her, “you should not let your clerk Bertha Largebutte sit on those parcels at the Post Office”. She said no it’s come all the way from Germany that’s why it looks like that. I opened the box and all this like sand poured out. Cletus was standing there and looked at it and said why, that’s volcanic dust, Gimme that it makes great slurry I can use it with my 8K Naniwa.
I unwrapped the packaging and well it was my brand spanking new Thater brush. I hurriedly got it home and soaked it in some water and borax so I could take it for a spin. Festus was over and looked at the liquid in the cup and said look at all that stuff. I said yea pretty evil looking and smelling stuff. He quickly drank it. I said what you did? He said that’s badger juice. Drink enough of that and it will turn you into superman. Hmm.
So I have another new brush. I need this like I need a hole in my head but Vince at Shamwow says the Germans make fantastic stuff.
The brush in question is the Chubby number 3 in Silvertip with a 26mm knot. It has a clear plexiglass handle with the uppermost part of the handle in black and is 8 sided (octagonal) but the very bottom grades to being perfectly round.
The fit and finish of the brush is beyond reproach. It has nice heft and balance and feels really nice in the hand and doesn’t seem to slip around, very ergonomic. Yes a lot of gunk came out of it in initial cleaning (don’t drink it though). A test drive revealed a master at lather building. About as good as anything I’ve ever seen no matter soap or cream. No loose hairs at this point. The brush is not silky smooth in the hand (dry) it feels a little coarse and when wet becomes so smooth you almost can’t feel it on the face yet it has plenty of backbone and has absolutely no floppiness. The hair fill is thick. It’s not as thick as my Simpson Chubby 3 or my Rooney medium but thicker than my Plisson HMW.
Now of course much of this is subjective and this is where the rubber meets the road. Though I really can’t find anything bad about this brush no matter how hard I try, while using it there just seemed to be something amiss I just couldn’t put my finger on. The fact is the bar here is very high. My other brushes consist of a Plisson HMW size 14 and a Simpson Chubby 3 in super and a Rooney Finest medium-all two band class brushes and as you use them they have that two band quality of combined softness yet you get that slight stimulation from the action of the hair on your face and the Thater being a 3 band Silvertip simply didn’t have it and I really missed it. I also have a Kent which is a smaller brush and its characteristics closely matched the Thater. Of course the price of the Thater is a good third less than the Simpson and Rooney and about half or less of what the Plisson cost.
So yes the brush is highly recommended and a great value for the money with the only caveat being if you like some feel and sensation as you use the brush it may not be the brush for you.
No I’m not looking to sell the Thater it’s a keeper so don’t ask. Now I have to go hide the brush so Festus doesn’t find it and use it on Baaaby.
