Thumbs up Heinrich L. Thäter "Series 4125/3" 28mm Finest Badger Silver Tip

I first came across Heinrich L. Thäter shaving brushes during a visit to The Different Scent. I was hooked immediately, and not just because of my previous Simpson disaster (cf http://www.straightrazorplace.com/fo...t-edition.html). It took me many, many months to get Lynn to finally order one. The rest is history, and SRD now carry a good number of Thäter brushes.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Herr Schuldes, CEO of Thäter shaving brushes, to have made this possible. I had the distinct pleasure of talking to him, and he was extremely pleasant to deal with: knowledgeable, dedicated to his craft, and extremely helpful, too.

But I digress. This is, after all, a review. So, let's hear what the vendor has to say first:

Craftsmanship: One word for you: Deutschland. German craftsmanship at work here. The handle is my personal favourite. Designed by German engineers for optimum ergonomics. Once you have used one, you will never want to use another handle, promise. The brush comes in a classy black cardboard box.

Lather Making Ability: Almost perfect. I tried the brush with various soaps and creams, and it always performed infinitely better than my Simpson or Mühle brushes. The only brush I have tried that is better is a Plisson that costs three times as much.

Tip Softness: Again, the USD 450 Plisson wins by a hair's breadth. Which makes the Thäter a clear winner in the value-for-money class. It is indeed softer than all other brushes I have tried so far (including USD 300 Simpson, Rooney, and Shavemac brushes). Simply fantastic.

Bristle Stiffness: Despite the super soft tips, the brush has tremendous backbone, making it equally suitable for creams and soaps. Nevertheless, you may want to refer to Nelson's review with respect to the feedback you can expect from this brush. I prefer the way the Thäter feels, but some people may not like it.

Knot Density: As dense as it physically gets, I think. Thickly packed, and does not shed hair. Just as it should be.

Price: Now here comes the beauty part. Straight Razor Designs recently made these brushes available to the US market, and the prices are right. Finally, superb finest badger brushes are available at affordable prices - at USD 152.99, this brush is a real steal.

Overall impression: Unless you want to pay for the brand name or strange handle materials, this is the best brush sensible money can buy. The 28mm knot may be too big for some, but there are smaller ones available, too. Get one!

Great review! I have the 4125/0. I think the review might be mislabeled. I think your brush is the 4125/3, but I could be wrong. The handles on these brushes are really great. I have noticed that some Shavemac branded brushes have used this handle as well. As far as density is concerned, I would say these are dense brushes, but not as dense as Rooney, some Simpsons, and some Shavemacs, and this might be a good thing.

    @BeBerlin
Thanks for convincing Lynn to get these at SRD. I would not have bought one if this did not happen.

    Default Thater brushes

    Ladies and gentlemen:

Robin's review of the Thater receives five stars out of five. Robin also introduced me to these brushes. I have the 22 mm. and the 24 mm. from Straight Razor Designs. To me, these brushes are perfect in every way. I cannot praise them enough, for soaps or creams, and I give them a high recommendation. Thanks to the noble Lynn Abrams for carrying them.

    Regards,
    Obie

Superb brush. Feels great in your hand and whips up a mean lather. With the softness of this brush it really is breaking a few laws of physics by providing the amount of backbone that it does. I love mine.

Received and used the 28mm today. This is as good as it gets. Presents a superb lather.

    Default Complete Agreement

I received this brush when they first became available on SRD. I must say, going from a cheap Chinese ebay brush to my Thater was a huge, expensive, leap, but worth every cent. This is my current benchmark, the 4 extra brushes I have received in that time to now fall behind (Vulfix, 2 Simpsons and an Jager). My only complaint was the price. At the time the US dollar was very high and the exchange rate for AU not good at all. Still, fantastic brush.

This is an old threat, but I am going to unfold it anyway. Just recently I got my new Thäter 4125/3 being allegedly 28mm.

I got mine from a German vendor that actually buys directly from Thäter wich means,
this brush has been "custom" ordered for me, although I opted for the classic 4125.
I had to wait three weeks, but I got a brand new freshly manufactured brush.

I opted for the 4125 in cream, chubby head and 28mm knot. Although the knot seems more like a 30mm one
the brush is outstanding. Not too big not too small. The chubby head looks awesome.

Thäter uses a new logo visible in the pictures attatched. I have not yet used the brush,
bit the bristles seem stiff and very soft and densely packed.
The brush does not smell at all, so I am really impressed so far
