    Smile Stiff brush preference

I've found that I prefer a VERY stiff brush. My cheap Van Der Hagen boar hair brush still wasn't stiff enough so tied nylon twine around the base of the bristles and wound it around building up about an inch up the bristles, tied it off then melted the twine knot in place. The bristles are nice and stiff and I can now work the lather in and finess the whiskers to stand up better.

Each to his own. Having used a wide variety of brushes I now like a brush neither too firm nor too floppy with average density. Perhaps it's because I'm a moderate who avoids extremes in all things.

i was also the same way once.. i wanted this ultimate stiff scrubby feel.. then i realized that even though i enjoyed it.. it wasn't in my best interests.. i eventually learned to be kind to my face and take everything with a light touch.

You like extra stiff? Try a whisk broom

Just kidding. A pure badger is pretty stiff too.

although the pure badger is stiff and scratchy.. a lot of the time it's still floppy.. ideally i like soft bristles with a shorter than usual loft..

    Default Scratchy uber alles

HLS, we're gonna be in the very small minority, but I like 'em strong too. I haven't tried a new brush that meets that criteria, having a vintage EverReady and a cheapo antique store find that fill the need. The one I'm most wanting to try is the Semogue 620 - supposed to be the most stiff & scratchy. With no US distributor (shame on them), and not doing digital transactions, I had a 'Want to Buy' ad posted for 5 months - nothing.

If you ever go to order a 620, lemme know.

BTW, the tip about tying a band around the base of the knot is great. A wide nylon tie-wrap would do.

My Rooney 1 in Finest has a stiff bristle, but very soft tips. For me, it's the perfect brush.

In general the lower the loft the stiffer the brush, face lathering brushes I set at 45mm
    Bowl lathering about 50/54 ish.

+1! It's one of the things I love about Rooney Finest. Very stiff for a badger.
