Default Ideas on mug vs scuttle

Shaving mug or scuttle. I've seen some awesome scuttles and I'm very impressed, but I've seen some nice mugs that look like they could do the job too. I've even contemplated building my own scuttle, what's everyone's ideas or thought is general? Scuttle or mug?

i'm no expert, but they serve similar yet different purposes. if you shave with hot water and hot lather, the scuttle may be for you. however, if you shave with cold water, a scuttle seems insignificant. especially now that we are in the hotter months, a mug should be sufficient for keeping the lather warm enough. however, when the weather gets cooler, a scuttle providing hot/warm lather i'm sure would feel great on your face for each pass. i don't have a scuttle, but i may invest in one when the weather cools down. i believe the topic of mugs vs scuttles is more one of personal preference.

Not to be grumpy or disagreeable, but this is finals week. I find that if I have a scuttle I will use it. You can certainly use a scuttle with ice water as well as hot. I will be starting my summer shave routine soon, as of tomorrow I will use ice water for the first time in my DB double.
I say if you sling clay, why not both? Play, experiment, have fun. The variety of this hobby is part of the fun and you already have access to the greatest resource on the planet.

As for design help: strong handles on either, lots of capacity for hot water in scuttle, don't start with a lip at the rim for your first, not too deep or too narrow, thick walls hold temperature better.

I have thought of making my own scuttles, but i no longer have access to a wheel or kiln and i never seem to get around to turning a wood one. Enjoy your journey for those who cannot undergo that path right now.

In general you use a scuttle to maintain the environment of the soap and to whip the stuff up while the mug limited is to whip the stuff up with. However, there is no reason you can't use either to do both things. It's just that it's easier and maybe cheaper to get the product to meet your needs.
