Thread: Some shaving brushes and a tribute to Otto's King Brush

Whipped Dog got in his latest order of (24/65) Silvertip Badger knots and I set to work at my lathe. Otto's Chesspiece brush (check out the shave of the day threads if you haven't seen it in all its glory) has always inspired me so I thought I'd give him the sincerest form of flattery possible and try to make one myself.

Great looking brushes tt. I really like the light brown one, although any one of them would be a welcome addition at my place.

Tell us more. What timbers have you used and what have you finished them with.

I like the longer ones myself, but my scuttle is as big as a cereal bowl...nice work!

1) I tried to shape like a bottle. The wood is Brazilian Cherry.
2) The Chess King is made from Tasmanian Blackwood. I hand carved the cross (not very well I'm afraid).
3) The Orange brush is Paduak. It has a very glassy finish, but the knot got drilled just a bit off center
4) My favorite (in my hands) is made from Cherry. Its very chubby.

The finish is from a company called "General Finishes" named "Arm -R-Seal." Its an oil finish that has polyurethane included. It covers well and leaves no streaks or bubbles. Very easy to use.

I bought 9 knots from Whippeddog and hope to turn a few more brushes this week.

I was going to ask if the chess piece is an actual chess set, but reading your descriptions I see you carved it yourself, very nice and it sure looks quite big. I was thinking about making one but didn't wanna steal ideas. I really like the shape and wood of #1, might have to look into finding some.

I "stole" my idea from Otto. Actually I think there was a guy making "chess piece" brushes and selling them. I've seen a Rook and a Bishop as well as Otto's cool brush!

Perhaps I'll give it a go next time I'm home in ohio (that's where all my tools are).
