Thread: Brush size for SRD bowl?

Hi guys

I just put my hands on a SRD bowl. I primarily chose the bowl over the mug to avoid the lather overflow that I get using the other pottery I've tried so far. The point is, my brush is just too small for this bowl. I can barely reach the side walls whilst using my fingertips. So I would like to know what type/size of brush would be adequate for this bowl.

Insights are appreciated, pic is enclosed.

When I use this bowl, I typically use anywhere from a 20mm knot brush to a 28mm knot brush. I find that with the larger brushes, I use more of the bottom of the bowl and with the smaller brushes I use the sides more. In any case, I have not found any deterrent to making big suds with it and I like the fact that the suds don't come flying out all over the place. In general, I do find that less water works best for me when making a healthy lather.

That's exactly what I was trying to do at first - use the bottom of the bowl. The brush is indeed quite small (~20mm). I just used it again (I'm lazy to shave in the morning during the week) and it was rather difficult to start lathering since the grooves in the brush stand at about the ideal height to reach the bowl, but I can barely hold the brush then. The groove is good to help spinning the brush, but it seems that the handle is just not adequate to this bowl. I could get a very nice lather once I inclined the bowl around 30 degrees and lather started building up quickly and then it went fine. Maybe I would profit from a brush with a longer handle?

I'm not familiar with that particular bowl but I have a variety of mugs, scuttles and bowls and the only time there has ever been an issue is where the bowl was really small and the brush really big like 30mm and there just wasn't enough room to maneuver the brush enough. Going the other way I have never had an issue. You just have to adjust your brush mvmt to fit the bowl.

Depends on which brush you want to use. Semogue 2000 boar might work as it is a long brush or 28-30mm knot brushes would surely be long enough.
