    Default African Blackwood

    Hello all,

A couple more African Blackwood brushes I turned over the last few days. This wood is rock solid real dense and turns beautifully. Having fun in the shop.

My Chinese 2 band should be here tomorrow, so I'll be finishing up an ebony brush soon. It's so much fun!

Oh boy, you're making me want to turn some African Blackwood! Those look excellent. What did you finish them with? Love the soft sheen they have.

    Very nice, lovely work.

I received a gift this morning from one of our local wet-shaving vendors that I'm going to raffle for Movember. It's a matching African Blackwood 3 piece razor and brush.

Thanks man, they are a fun little project for sure.
For finish on theses I used teak oil. I usually like Waterlox, but it won't cure up on some of the exotics. For cocobolo, ipe, and this wood I give them a good soak in a jar of teak oil for a couple hours as a base, after a day of drying Ill do four more short dunks in the jar maybe 20 mins or until I remember they are in there. I let them dry for a day between dunks in the finish.
Once out they get a quick wipe down which is what you see on the lathe pic, so its still wet there, then about 15 mins later there will be a little oil that seeps out of the grain and is a little tacky , spin on the lathe and a light viva paper towel buffing. Its an exterior finish that really soaks in but doesn't build up on top of the wood at all.
