    Default 2nd try - success!

Well trying to save my first try didn't quite work out. The imitation bone basically exploded when I had a relatively minor catch at the joint of the two materials.

Started over with some marble wood. Finished with tung oil. Looking forward to trying it out!

Test lather this morning was great! I was probably a little too worried about getting it wet - but everything held up beautifully. I should have taken some advice I had read here earlier and washed the knot prior to use! I was too fired up to try it out and just just followed my usual routine and soaked in my scuttle in hot water. Noticing the color of the water... I proceeded to wash it out. It was pretty dirty actually! Once I got it cleaned up - it lathered up really well and the size of the handle felt great in my hand. I've been using an Edwin Jager for years and the handle is so small.

Now each of my three sons wants me to make one for them. I have a couple of macassar ebony blanks and I used one to make a wine stopper. Nice to turn, pretty dirty, but the tung oil finish doesn't look great. I sanded with 220, 400, 600, 2000 but the surface still doesn't look smooth. It feels smooth. I tried two coats of tung oil with steel wool in between but it still doesn't look right. I may strip it off, resand, and try again. Anyone tried to turn macassar ebony for a brush handle? Any suggestions on finish?
