Default FS: 5/8 merkur solingen straight, silver inlay.

    Hi there guys,

Still more pruning...I've got a 5/8 Merkur Solingen Germany round point for sale. It has the Mercury god-head logo inlayed in one of the cream celluloid scales - I imagine it's german silver. The blade has general patina, it looks quite attractive in my books as I imagine this razor is from the mid 1900's. The Blade is perfectly straight with a keen edge, and there are no major chips or cracks in the scales.

Now the only thing is.... I've read about what's called 'celluloid rot' and I may be mistaken but I think the scales on this one may be afflicted.. they don't look 'rotten' but all I know is that when the blade is closed in the scales, after 2 days or so a light surface rust occurs on the blade portion behind the scales, it's really quite bizarre. I haven't coated the blade with anything, but all my other blades don't behave like this. I keep the razor fully open and in another location away from my other blades and well, no rust at all..

I think a handy collector might take this and make up some nice custom wood scales and even successfully 'transplant' the rather attractive silver god-head into the new scales, and have a really unique razor for the collection - you really don't come across Merkur straights all that often, and I think the combination of the good blade and the silver god-head warrant the asking price.

Which is $70.00 inclusive of shipping from SA. - OR - Make an OFFER

Better coat that blade with oil just in case it is cell rot. or you will lose the blade as well. I recently took one of my razors out of the box and it had brown spots on the cream colored scales, when I opened the razor the blade was rusted in the same portion as the scales.

    Default Everything must go..

    Hey guys,
I guess the afflicted scales must be putting people off. Well I can understand that, however the blade really is a good one, and also I think the patina shown in the pictures here makes it look a lot more pronounced than it really is in person..

I can detach the scales and package separately when sending this, so you won't receive a rusty blade of course.

Basically someone make me an offer you think is fair for this item, it really has to be sold, thanks guys.

I've never had to deal with celluloid rot, but the stories can be straight out of a horror movie - one razor triggers more sometimes months even a year after it has been removed. I'd certainly not want any trace of these scales to be shipped to me.

Ah, well I guess I'll have no luck selling this then.. though, I'm not so sure the 'rot' is that infectious, else I would have had some other occurances in my collection, and really this is the ONLY razor I've ever had this happen to. I might just rescale the blade for my own keeping then.. I'm thinking Zebrawood...

    Thanks anyways.

The blade shouldn't be infectious. I've tossed two or three scales that were decomposing, and my blades have been fine since. I like your razor, I'm just not in that kind of budget range, even if it is a great deal
