    Default FS: 5/8 shumate

I had this in a set last week, now it's just the razor. I also spent a few more minutes with the polish, so it's cleaner, but I don't want to sand the blade as the pitting is not affecting the function in any way. Should be a rather nice starter.

    Here are the details:

    • 5/8 rounded spike point, full hollow
    • Some surface pitting most notably one large spot on the back, doesn't affect function.
    • The scales are nice and rounded bone color celluloid with black spacer; blade is centered and tight.
    • The maker stamp is faded but looks like SHUMATE CUTLERY, ST. LOUIS.
    • Jimps on bottom of shank for better grip.
    • shave ready

Since some people seem to be concerned about honing I am certainly happy to rehone the razor in the next few months, although I would think that by the time it needs honing you should be learning to do touchups.

Price $40 shipped worldwide 1st class uninsured. Other shipping options at buyer's expense.

ah, cool, glad to hear it made its way through the posting system. now comes the fun part keep us posted as great first shaves are the exception, not the norm, but there are always people with good suggestions, or just encouragement

and no, dave, i'm not even close to a honemeister lol. it takes me a lot of time to get razors where i want them, but because of all of you guys who honed my razors i know what i'm shooting for. and i do have my reference razors to make sure i'm not getting off the mark

    Well, here goes:

0600 in the shower. Shaved the head with new Headblade....lets not go there in this thread

0615 out of the shower, and very excited about my first str8 shave. 0618 with lather on the face, not great lather mind you, but lather. 0619, first , then , in the famous words of that latin funny man Ricky Ricardo, "Oh Lucy, you have some splaning to do". (Not you gugi, im confident its a hammer problem, and not the nail in this case). I got one side of my face, well, mostly shaved, but with lots of pulling. It felt like when I have a very dull M3 razor. I got about half my mustache area shaved, then I called it quits . 0622 out with the M3 again to boost the confidence once again.

    Plans going forward.
    1. New brush for soap (might not need it, but hey, it as good an excuse as any to buy a nice C&E brush).
    2. New soap (reference #1)
    3. Take much, much more time, and not give up so quickly.
    4. Ask the peanut gallery (you, and you know who you are ) for more good advice.

I will say the razor is stunning. I just hope its not mad at me for putting it away so quickly. Im sure it feels cheated now

Your tools are probably fine; unless you just really want to spend the money or you're trying to apply lather with a potato-scrubbing brush, it might be wiser to wait until you have a better feel for what you're doing before you buy more. Alternately, if you have money to spare, feel free to help out a poor grad student...

Bingo. Don't be distressed that your first shave was less than pleasant -- they rarely are. Take your time, use a light touch, and experiment with angle and pressure until you find the place that makes the blade glide through the hair. Remember that the blade in your hand is quite probably the sharpest thing you've ever used; you won't have to do much work to make it do its job, so mostly you just need to *control* it as its own weight takes care of the cutting. Also, don't forget to stretch your skin taut, as this is absolutely essential. Without tight skin, you'll never be able to shave smoothly, as the skin will flex under the blade and make it jitter and jump.

    Best of luck!

    congratulations on the first shave!
you will get more feedback with a straight razor, esp. light one like this one, but this is good thing - it improves your technique much faster. i think the usual advice is go slowly, i.e. start with your sideburns and cheeks with the grain and slowly expand the area. be careful with the angle of the razor - vary it a bit and you will find where it needs to be. also don't worry about too close of a shave as you start - it will come with time and the shaves will be decent anyways. a bit of momentum is needed, i.e. start moving the blade a little further away from the hair, not from it resting against the hair. usually the subsequent shaves get better, if they don't and you think the razor needs to be sharper just let me know and i'll be happy to look at it and make it even sharper (i don't like them extremely sharp as they start loosing in smoothness, perhaps need to get better at honing, but in any case i have shaved several times with it and found no problem with the shave)

    hang in there
