Thread: newbie on a quest

Howdy. I'm from Texas and new to the art of shaving with a straight razor. I have read about choosing a razor and I am quite excited. However, the price of a new razor has been rather daunting and I feel somewhat apprehensive about purchasing a razor on ebay...one can never truly be sure about the quality of the merchandise being sold. Do any of ya'll have good advice on a first purchase or have a spare blade that you are willing to part with for a reasonable fee. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to SRP! I'm sure you'll find everything that you need to get started in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum....there have been quite a few razors posted For Sale lately - just keep your eyes open! You can also check the Vendor's Corner, several members sell inexpensive shave-ready straights through there as well....

If you haven't already read the sticky posts in the newbie section. There are several members here who offer the chinese double arrow and the polish wapienica razors honed. Alternatively if you don't insist on a brand spanking new razor you can get a vintage blade that will likely have some cosmetic issues, but will shave well.

This sounds like the best course of action, not because of the cost, but because you will get a free lesson in person, which is worth a lot more than just a good deal on a razor.

Yes, please join us in Austin on the 19th if possible. There will be a few newbies (like me) and a few very experienced hands (like Kenrup), so there will be lots of learning going on. Also I believe there will be some door prizes, so you could get some kit for free if you're lucky!
