Thread: Dubl Duck Special #1 in Black Palm

This is another razor that was finished up this weekend...... A 4/8 Dubl Duck Special #1 in Black Palm Scales....This one has brass Micro hardware with a brass wedge...
Although I love the look of the Black Palm, this stuff was a hard wood to work with.... By the way I have enough to do 2 more sets of scales with this stuff so if anyone is interested in having a set made, PM me... This one is already spoken for....

Nice work, Glen. Can you elaborate on the difficulties you had with the wood? I assume the loose, linear grain and softness were the prime culprit. What is the finish? any problems with that?

The long linear splinters are tuff to eliminate you have to use very high grit paper to sand or you just keep getting runners then more sanding etc; etc: So getting the right shape took awhile longer than normal....

The finish was pretty straight forward, I used wipe on poly, but put 3 coats on, then let that dry hard, then re-sanded with 1000 grit.... then 1 coat every 2 hours untill I had 15....

Pretty timber Glen. Gives the illusion of jimped bone.
The duck's nice too - of course !

I have been thinking of trying some black palm. I will have to keep that in mind, Brazil walnut is the same. Very brittle, likes to chunk if you try to route the edges over.

I love the look on this those scales are perfect.Paul
