Is that burl wood or a birdseye in the stand? The ends look like walnut or almost snakewood. Did you use a varnish finish? I'm an amateur woodworker so I appreciate the metal and wood work.

The stand is made from bigleaf maple burl, ringed gidgee, and Australian ebony. This was my first time working with gidgee, and I have to say it's amazing. It is an acacia, like koa, but considerably harder and more dense. It's one of the finest timbers I've ever worked with (expensive, too). The photos don't do justice to the chatoyancy.

Lately I've been using TruOil to finish my woodwork. It's easy to use and leaves an excellent hand-rubbed finish.

I just got my first Non folder from Charlie and have been trying to decide on a nice stand that keeps the blade safe. I love what you came up with the woodwork is stunning as well as the blades. I think I will be borrowing some design ideas, I have some Koa my Mom and Dad brought back from Hawaii and will pick from several other woods I have for accents. Where do you get some of the woods you use I haven't seen or heard of several of them till looking at your sight.

I love koa. The more figured, the better. Be sure to finish it as well as you can. Finishing makes all the difference on that wood.

I admit that I sort of collect lumber. If I see something neat or new, I'll buy it (if I can afford it). I get the majority of my wood from only a couple of sources. The most important one is Gilmer Wood in Portland, Oregon. They carry an incredibly wide selection of exotic and domestic timbers, all of it high-quality. Their website is very well put together for those of us who can't visit their warehouse often enough. I'm lucky that my Grandparents live near by, so I like to make a side trip to dig through Gilmer's cutoff and bargain bins (there are some real gems in there). Another good source of domestic timbers is Mark from Burlsource (itsaburl@hotmail.com). He collects a lot of burl from the Pacific coast and recently found a supplier of Australian timber. Everything in the latest razor stand was from Mark.

Phil, my favorite is the fire finished one, but naked steel does that to me. Your woodwork really makes those blades stand out.
