Thread: Two Customs and Scrimshaw by Robert Williams.

I have been going to Robert Williams house for a while now to watch him make razors (and enjoy the local pub). Each time, I am amazed at the work he does. Last Saturday there were two razors he was working on that I thought were amazing.The first one was a "Steam Punk" razor. He did some amazing work on the razor. This razor was ready to be sent to the lucky owner. I hope he has it by now, it is even more amazing in person.





Robert was working on a razor with Scrimshaw Ivory Scales. I watched him create beautiful Ivory scales from two square hunks of Ivory. After he made the ivory Scales he went to work on creating the Scrimshaw. After shaping the Ivory and then buffing it to an incredible finish he went to work creating the Scrimshaw. First he used a computer to create an image he was going to place onto the Ivory. After creating the image, he moved it into a Photoshop type program and literally had to draw what most of the image. Once the drawing was done, he printed it on some kind of weird paper and transferred the image to the ivory. He then had to use a scrimshaw tool and hand carved the image. I was amazed at the hours of work it took just to create the scales.

After the scales were finished, he rendered them digitally and worked on the art with the computer. The scale work (size) was very painstaking to get correct. The image was very detailed after he worked on it in the software for quite some time.



After the digital work, he transferred the image to the scales to do the scrimshaw work. Right about here is my favorite part. We went for lunch at a local pub. I had Cavatelli and Broccoli that was amazing as well.

The finished scales. The amount of time and effort the razor creating artisans put into their work is amazing. I hope this helps all you Str8 Shavers that have a custom hand made razor and those that are waiting for a custom razor understand the efforts that go into each and every razor made.

Incredible. The talent is unbelievable, both his and here at SRP. I really like the way that steampunk tang and tail turned out.

And thanks for taking the photos. It must be pretty neat to have Robert Williams live so close.

That steampunk razor is quite possible my favorite razor of all time. Of course, all time only started four or five months ago. But it's just an amazing piece IMHO. If I ever were to buy a new razor, that would be the one. Your pics and info. are much appreciated. Thanks!

Wow. Robert did a great job on that. Are those gears inlaid in there or did Robert engrave them? Its hard to tell from the pic.
