Thread: Antique Map scales on a Jos Elliot's "Rangoon" blade

While at a goodwill awhile ago I came across an old jewelry box that had an antique map on the lid. I brought it home and proceeded to butcher the poor thing with my scroll saw but I was left with one usable set of scales.

I coated the wood and map with an oil based sealer (Arm-R-Seal) and found a cool translucent gold acrylic that reminded me of pirate's gold.

that is really, really cool. it's ideas like this that make me want to make my own scales.

That is pretty cool. Makes me want a pirate ship to go with it.

Is the map printed on? It kinda looks like it might be incised somehow. Hard to tell exactly in the pic. Looks pretty cool either way.

The map is on paper which is glued to the wood. The oil-based sealer was applied over all of it to keep things safe.
