    Default My Fathers Day gift(s)

I just wanted to share a couple pics of my Fathers Day gifts from my kids.

My daughter-in-law built this 'concealment' cabinet. She used some of the same wood I used to build my kids chest of drawers with (some 15yrs ago). She seen a pic of one online and decided to build one herself. She asked me to plane a few pieces down and cut to a specific length (which I assumed was for a project she wanted to do with their home)....NOW it 'all makes sense to me.' All the wording was done 'free hand'...no stencils used.

It closes with magnets and aligns perfectly horizontal when open, for display. Shown in the pic are a few commerative bottles, available only at JD's distillery...along with a couple bottle of my favorite, Single Barrel Select.

I just bought myself a bottle of Lagavulin, so Happy Father's day to me.

Nice cabinet (and great choice on the Lagavulin, Utopian!).

Love the richness of color. Nice cabinet. The lettering looks better than stencils would have. I'm always interested to see others peoples take on the liquor cabinet design. Still in the design stages of my own, with a couple of options to choose from.

The wood came from cabin by the river (Kaskaskia) (about 1 1/2 miles south of my farm), built around 1870-ish, according to local lore and legend. It was moved to a farm across the way from me, back in the 1930's and lived in until the early '50s. The new property owner was going to tear it down and burn it. But, the locals nearly strung him up for thinking as much. So, everyone got together and 'parted it out.' The back wall of our little "Opry" is covered in wood from this cabin, too. I got all the planking from the roof, as it had years of tar paper and a ga-zillion nails in it, since I was 'the youngest.' I spent, on and off, an entire summer planing all the wood. Which was interesting, considering all the nails.

I think the reason is takes stains so well, and has a rich color, is due to years of baking under the sun.

I'm sure you guys know that making furniture and other accessories out of re-purposed wood is all the rage right now. Pallet wood is especially in demand. Every new restaurant or home remodel it seems has pallet wood walls or accents somewhere.

Yeah, my daughter-in-law made my wife a sign out of some of the pallets I use to store hay on. My wife is a bee keeper, so for Mother's Day, she made her a sign that reads "Local Honey" and a huge honey bee.
