    Default My New Work Knife

My new every-day shop knife is all done and ready to use! I made the blade from CPM 154 and pre-ban ivory then sent it to my mother for a horizontal carry sheath. This is just her third sheath and it's made from steerhide with a stingray inlay. I've been using this knife almost exclusively since it was finished. Comfortable, nice-looking, and incredibly sharp. Perfect around the shop and everywhere else.

That is very nice. It is both utilitarian and has a graceful beauty about it as well. I am fond of a wedge grind myself.

Does the sheath hold the blade by friction or some sort of mechanical means?

I like it. Not the grind I would have expected you to choose for yourself.

...but your sheath is prettier than mine...

The blade stock is so thin that hollow grinding wasn't really an option. The full flat was also easier to make which was a good thing. I admit that this sheath is prettier than yours. She got new leather and better tools, and used the knowledge gained from making your sheath to really improve the quality.

The blade is just held in by friction, it's simple and easy to use. I'm not worried about blade retention; yesterday I ended up rock-climbing for several hours before remembering to take the knife off of my belt.
