Default linux download for a laptop

ok, i have to load a new operating system into my sons laptop, i want to use linux, but i have to download it to a cd first, any linux runners on here give me a good website to get the system from needing just a basic copy.

A bit frustrated with the new version of ubuntu though. I would go for 10.04 at the moment.

I would tend to agree with that. The latest one looks like it was molested by an iPhone. Not keen. 10.04 has been very much to my liking.

    How old is your laptop?

Mint Debian works really well and is easy to use. LXDE will perform better than gnome.

    Or straight up debian

I'm running Mint 11 on three different machines, 2 older laptops and a desktop. It's been flawless. You can get it HERE.

I really like Linux Mint right now and I am running Mint 9 which is the Long Term Support, which I think is based on ubuntu 10.4 I also run several systems on my USB sticks. I have also used Mint Fluxbox for a dinosaur that was running windoze ME. That laptop would not support USB boots so I had to choose a CD boot. Easy Peasy is a really nice netbook distro as well, and I use it on my computer at work which was running windoze 2000. I love my Linux!!! And the price is great. distrowatch.com is a great resource to most if not all distributions.

I've got Mint 10 on one box and Mint 11 on another. Both quite good. The 10 has the KDE interface, which I like a lot, and the 11 the gnome. I'm learning to like the gnome too. Either or AFAIC. Both good GUI systems.

A lot of people have gone off anything offering Gnome 3 - is that what happened with Ubuntu? I've always been a Fedora or Gentoo user myself, and since Fedora moved to Gnome 3 I have to say I am enjoying the Mac OS!
