    Default Another Engraved Colt

I just finished this one. I had the hardest time photographing this one. The grips are not that washed out in real life but my camera kept wanting to set the exposure for the black gun and I just could not get the grips to not wash out in the photos I tried to take. The thin film of oil kept making rainbows on the bluing.

This is a Colt 1903 hammerless in .380. The theme was an Art Nouveau theme inspired by one of my favorite Artist of that period Alphonse Mucha. The customer and I decided to use two of Mucha's girls from his "star" series and I scrimshawed them on the grips. The scroll I had to develop from a lily type flower that Mucha used in a lot of his poster and figure work. Developing a new scroll pattern of your own from scratch can be quite a challenge.

The scroll is a selective french gray on a blued background. Its not inlay but it has that contrast effect.

What a cool transition on an old school pistol.

Ray, you do some beautiful work.

I love 1911's but I'm not real fan of the Series 70's. I have to say that Series 70 and the little 1903 are fine looking pistolas.

Stunning work,Question? How do you get the gold inlay to stay in place? do you undercut like a dovetail and than sort of mold in the Gold.

The work is beautiful. I've always loved engraved firearms, especially all the double guns you see in museums. These examples would fit right in with those master works.
