Thread: My Great Grandmothers clock

Last July my Uncle brought me a clock that i remember seeing in my grandmothers kitchen. He thought I might want it! LOL He said that he remembers as a young boy looking at it in his Grandmothers kitchen and being amazed at the pretty pictures on it etc. As we looked at it he laughed and said see how they are old postcard pictures or something similar that were cut out and pasted on. They are very faded now but i can imagine how "pretty" they were to him as a young boy.

It didn't work but, I hung it in my kitchen if for nothing else than a decoration. Today I was wandering the internet investigating old clocks. I saw a picture of a similar model and thought that that makes sense....and that part should hang there! I almost had to get my daughter with her small hands to reach in but I got it. It has been running for about 6 hours and is right on with the electric one in the same room.

My Grandson was here for the holidays today. He is to young to remember it yet. [6 months] But wouldn't it be cool if he remembers his Great Great Great Grandmas clock hanging in the kitchen ticking away?

i can understand and know exactly how you feel, my family has a tradition there is currently sitting in my mothers home a grandfather clock that belonged to my grandfather, it has been in our family for roughly 150 years of so. when its time to move on, it will come to me, being the first born male, then it will move on to my son when i am ready to move it on. this thing was made by a gentleman in bucks co pa, it has the weights and the pendulum, and a nice loud booming gong on ever hour, 1 for every hour

I was given my Opa and Omas' pendulum wall clock earlier this year, it calls the quartr hrs, has the Westminster Chime. Keeps lovely time. My mother is sending a very old wall clock over for my coming birthday, a wall clock from Friesland in Holland, the area my late Opa came from. It has wieghts and may be over 300yrs old.

After the clock ran for about 24 hours it lost about 3 minutes. I noticed in my reading about them that you can adjust the speed by changing the height of the pendulum. There is a nut under the weight to raise and lower it. I had moved it before when experimenting with it. I then raised it as high as it would go and in a few hours it had gained 4 min. It seems to be a fairly sensitive adjustment but it adjusts too fast and too slow so I know the proper spot is somewhere in the middle. I better be careful this might be the start of another hobby.

My gramma has a clock in her basement... its got the hanging weights and stuff... belonged to her mother or grandmother...

I love old clocks.

i will sneak over to my mothers house to get a pic of the grandfather clock, hopefully will be able to post it within a few days
