Thread: Hollow grinder

Here are some pictures of my cobbled together wet grinder I made for hollow grinding razors. I bought an arbor at a flea market and have been itching to make something out of it. The trash bin does pretty good job of containing the water. The top container serves as a lid/water reservoir and has a hole in it that drips on the grinding wheel.

I believe I will do the majority of the grinding with my belt sander and do the finish grinding on the wet grinder. The grinder is way to slow to do the bulk of the work. I tried it on a razor and had no problems with over heating. I like slow pace and feel of the grinding wheel when doing the last bit of grinding.

do you have different diameter wheels? how do you get the right grind for the various blade sizes and thicknesses?

Very nice, Charlie. I think it's the greatest that this forum is robust with many people willing to share their ideas and experiences rather than keeping them a "trade secret". Randy and I have built the same belt grinders and in talking with each other we co-devised a simple water cooling system. He's implemented his and I have yet to put mine together, but I'll definitely post pics when I get mine done. It's working well for Randy. This was after some experienced bladesmiths (strictly knifemakers) said it couldn't be done (water cooling for abrasive belt grinders) or at the least it wasn't worth the trouble. Don't tell a razor guy that something can't be done!

Regarding the water cooling for belt grinders: you guys with the Baders and your variable speeds probably don't have such challenges.

With me "you can have any radius you want as long as it is 4"

I have used an eight inch wheel or platen on everyting that I have made.

I have seen Randy's grinders they are very nice. I look forward to seeing yours. I would like to make something that nice some day. I made the platform long on this grinder so that I would be able to convert it to a 1X42 sander on day once I decide how to do it.

The exchange of information here is great. I learn new things all of the time. There are so many people and varied backgrounds to learn from. It is one of the great things about the net. I am glad this forum has not fallen into the trap of group think where there is one approved method of doing things.

I bought today a grinder to do a little sanding and polishing and the stock wheels are too big for my hollowest razors. We have the metric system here and the wheels are 150mm in diameter by 20 mm width, that's about 5.9 inches in diameter and 13/16 inches wide in your system.
I've put one of my full hollow razors sit in the wheel and I can see a glimpse of light between the middle of the razor and the wheel which means that the wheel doesn't touch the hollow part of the blade.
Red, how come your 8'' wheels are good for you? What would be the ideal diameter for the hollowest grind razors?

Approx. 6 cm Diameter will work on most of the hollow grounds.

mind if i ask a few questions on your set up. first off what kind of motor are you running i have an old dyer motor that im thinking about setting up. and also where did you get teh pulley. i will have some more questions but this will be the beginning
