Thread: Urnes Portal Custom Idea

After spending some time drooling over different razors from all parts of the world, and tried a few successfully, I couldn't help thinking of one of my favorite designs in the world: The Urnes Stave Church has been with me as long as I can remember. Actually, I saw a replica of it at Epcot in Florida and something about it rang true. Years later (and 4 years ago) I designed my first and only tattoo. Below are my tattoo, the Urnes Portal, and the church itself, which is the oldest of its kind, almost 900 years old. I guess this style of art is called Urnes Style. It's quasi celtic, but more elegant and animalistic, to me.

My question is this: can anyone integrate this design style into a straight razor? Maybe the back, etching, scales, all the above? Does such a beast already exist? HAH! Should I grab a dremmel and do it myself? WHY!?! when there are so many excellent talented artists here? Dammit Jim, I'm a musician, not a sculptor.

Thanks! Indeed, John and I have spoken on this very topic and I am certain he is the only man for the job. Now I just need to find a razor worthy of such a project.

I have been to the church a couple of times, and can see very well the inspiration.

It is a lovely church, situated in one of the finest areas of Norway, By the fjords in the western parts

What is the deal with that portal? Was it intended to be an entryway into the church? Or some metaphoric thing related to Yggdrasil?

I think the ornaments are symbols of good and evil.
It is believed that the lion in the bottom, biting at the snakes, is supposed to represent the good(Jesus) in christian iconography from that era.
And the snakes, of course, evil.
So I think it is supposed to keep evil out, and only let the people of good faith inside.

The fun part is that the portal is actually from an even older church than the present, situated on the same site at one time.

it is built on top of a pagan site that was holy to the old viking faith named åsatro, thats why "Varg Vikernes" tried to burn them/(Stavkirkene) down. This is one of the nicest Church i have seen in my life, i have also been to that site many many times, and all those wood slabs that make the outer walls of the church would have taken long time to put on. But the funny part is that it still stands after so many houndreds of years and wars. if you want someone to draw such old drawings on to a paper so you can transfer them over to wood or someone else can transfer them over to wood i would have talked with a tattoo guy to do the drawings for you cause they do celtic,goth,nordic work all the time
