Thread: HOW DO YOU CLEAN A BLACKENED BLADE?

Hey guys, I have a question. A friend of mine in my Bible Study asked me if I could restore his Grandfathers Straight razor. It is "The Artist" Levering Razor Co. 11/16" Oblique point. I've added a picture. The blade is almost completely black from age, which I believe is because of the blade being Carbon Steel. I may be and there's a good chance I am wrong about that, but how do you clean a razor in this condition. Do I take it to the buffer, put it in the tumbler? I've never dealt with this before and really need some advice. Thanks for any help you can give!

But, basically, you can start with metal polish, and if that doesnt work, start hand sanding, progressing through grits up to 1000-2000.

If you have a dremel type of tool, and can make yourself some of these:

then you can get the job done in no time , hand sanding can take forever most of the time.
