Thread: KMG Horizontal/Vertical grinder

I've lately seen a few ask about being to able to turn their vertical grinder into a horizontal one. The Bader grinder has a hinge attachment one can buy to make the grinder go horizontal. I've seen a few pics of it and it does work. Someone I know has it working too in his shop.

The KMG doesn't. So I asked my local friend, welder and genius at what he does to make my KMG flip horizontal.

He built me a dedicated table from 9/32" thick steel. All I can say, it works flawless. I'm still waiting for him to built the horizontal work rest but in the meantime I'm already making good use of it.

One thing's for sure. It will be the last thing standing if they drop the A-bom. That table is as sturdy as they come. I bet it all weights a few hundred pounds.

Wow! that is one sweet tool. It looks it like will be very useful. I like the solid thunk when you lock it in place, heavy duty and precise.

Butch, you should watch some of the videos at KMG for the horizontal grinder. It should give you an idea. It's extremely precise and useful for all the spine, tang, monkey tail and profiling work for example. Sure you could buy a MAP or try to go vertical and freehand. Nobody says you need one. Many do without. The ones that can go horizontal love it. I sure make good use of it.

when i need ot i jsut scab together a few bars of steel and make a vert. work rest that i can movearound for the different wheels and plattens i have

not sure i can see spending $$ on the MAP arm tho cool
if it tells you anything about me i dont even take the time to make jigs for work in the shop

guess what i want to know is how you ajust the table to get use out of all the belt and just not the center ?

I'll update this thread with pictures when I get my workrest back but in a nutshell it's very simple. The workrest which off course is made horizontal can be adjusted up or down. You can also keep the work rest steady but use the tracking of the grinder to go up or down just like in KMG's video. The workrest itself has different cut-outs so it can be used for the small wheel attachment or bigger wheels. One side stays flat to be used for the platen

BTW tho i might seem to be comming of a a bit of an ass but i liek your setup way better then gettting a whole new grinder that is of limited use (less you need that type of thing every day )
