Thread: Say hello to beastie :D

Today I visited a shop where the owner is one of those guys who can fix everything and whose workshop looks like a big scrap yard packaged into a small garage. He is one of the few in the mechanics business who still deal with end users primarily. I got referred to him by a colleague.

I contacted him earlier thise week for a motor. At first I was going to buy a 3 phase motor with a VFD, but that turned out a bit too pricey, considering that it was not included in the CFO approved budget for my grinder (I kind of accidentally forgot to mention it). So I settled for a nice 1400rpm 1.5 HP single phase motor, and we agreed on a price. Since this was an older model, I could have it at cost.

Today I went to pick it up. They guy was very friendly and helpful. Only problem was: he could not find the motor. He was certain he had it somewhere, but he could not find it. After inspecting all motors he had left, he suggested I took the bigger, 3HP model for the price we agreed for the small model! KA-CHING!

Needless to say, I took it.
With this amount of power, I decided to name it beastie, since it will not just eat but gobble steel with the appropriate belt

I do not think you will be bogging down your motor while grinding. You got a great deal.

Well, if I somehow got it to bog down and go 'CLUNK', I don't think I want to be standing in front of the grinding table.
I'm not sure exactly what will happen, but I suspect it would be sudden and exciting.

Good for you! It is really nice to get a break sometimes.

I did notice the size of the shaft on that motor. Mine had a 7/8" diameter so it was not easy or cheap to find a 3 step pulley that would fit on it. I wish you luck with that. I bought mine ( cast iron) from some company in Canada.

It's a 24 mm (metric) shaft. Slightly over 15/16. I've noticed that shaft diameter in Europe are bigger than in the US.
We use 19 mm (3/4) where the US uses 5/8. 5/8 is impossible to get here for anything bigger than toy motors.

The company that makes the pulleys used by KMG can make those same pulleys up to an inch and a half, and they can custom make metric diameters. It might indeed cost a couple of $, but that will be a last resort option. I can buy metric stepped pulleys locally. The one thing I need to check is the spacing between the steps, to see if it is compatible with the KMG stepped pulley.

Worst case, I either buy a custom pulley, or buy a single wheel pulley and change the pulley when needed.

That is just to much motor for any use you are likely to have, NOW I'll tell what I have a 1 hp that I will trade you straight up!!

Nice score, you should be able to run a lot of belt or wheel with out problems.

Very cool! That motor will never know you are actually using it & the low RPM's make it even better.

I got an old school cartoon image in my head with you trying to bog down the motor and becoming one with the belt...bam, bam, bam---round and round you go!
