Thread: Some progress pics of my first razors

I have made some pics of my two first borns yesterday. I am no knifemaker or such, I have only a bit of experience in metal working, so the progress will be slow. They are going to the HT after I have tapered the tails. The japanese style is 7/8, the sheffield style is 6/8 in size. I roughed these two with a 5" bench grinder, I will finish them as soon as my belt sander is complete.

Well, there is not much more to tell really. Both are from 5mm thick stainless, with about 0,5-0,6% carbon content, these are mainly practice razors. If I get them right they will shave fine, but probably they won't be the best razors ever made The older softer sheffields shave fine too, so there is no reason these can't be fine razors. At least I will know if the steel is not good enough to make straights out of it. I got the steel from a friend, who can HT it for me professionally, so this option is the most economical for me. There is no reason to buy pricey steel in big lumps if I happen to not like the whole razor making process. Well, at least it doesn't seem like this will happen
If these come out fine, than I will get some nice carbon steel. The problem is that here in the EU 1095, 1084 and such steels are not easy to get, and they are very pricey if you happen to get it somewhere. I didn't find any nice steel with the thickness of 5-6-7mm, at least for normal prices.

Nice looking razors! Can't wait to see them finished. Can you not find old files at car boot sales or similar where you live? I've got a whole box full of them for future projects when I'm not using flat mill O1...

Those look pretty skillfully "roughed out" for a 5" bench grinder .... very impressive !
Cant wait to see them finished and featured in the shave of the day !

Small quantities can be harder to get by.
O1 steel is called DIN2510 in europe. If you buy it in lengths of 6m, it is quite affordable.
Of course, this is enough to make about 30 to 40 razors so not really an option if you are not interested in making many.

Fine looking blades you have there. The grinds look nice and even. Post some more pics as things progress. Looking good.

For only having a "bit" of experience in metal working, those rough blades look very nice. I look forward to seeing the finished product...thanks for sharing.

Thank you, I hope the finished product won't be too bad My experience so far with steel is a japanese style chefs knife made for my GF, and 4-5 restore jobs on razors, and thats pretty much it. I watched others at work a lot in a knife shop, maybe thats why I got lucky at my first blades, we will see how they come out.
