Very informative and great skill. It is interesting to see how one of those blanks takes shape.

Charlie, I have really enjoyed all of your videos. This one was no exception. It was very interesting to see how you move the steel, especially when drawing out the tang and creating the monkey tail.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Newbie question here: I am wondering if during the forging process you could use a shaped swage to bring some amount of initial hollowing into the blade and thus save a bit of time on the grinder. Would that work, or is it more trouble than it is worth?

Or... how about a heavier hammer? Bring the 6 pounder to Mike's Mash 'Em Flat and the blank could be razor shaped in just a few smacks. With a 10 pound pounder in your hand, the blank may even throw up its shank in horror and shape itself.

Why do you do this to me? I've been wanting to get into the blacksmithing side and you go and do this...you just added more fuel to the fire....

This is GREAT! For me its the craftsmanship I find the most appealing in anything. As a craftsman myself I would rather have something handmade than done completely by machine. To hold a piece whether it be a fine handmade tobacco pipe (as I make) or a hand forged blade or the most utilitarian form of tool, its the passion and artistic inturpitation of the craftsman that make all the difference.
