Default Store in St. Louis, MO

    Hello,
I want to buy my first straight razor, and I want to buy it after seeing it in a store. Do you know any store that carries straight razors in St. Louis?

    thanks,
    dasa

I assume you are looking for a new razor, correct?

I don't know of any stores right off the top of my head, but if you find one let me know!

If you browse the antique stores and whatnot, you will find a reasonably priced vintage razor that will shave as good or better than a new one (once it's honed).

From what I understand (I only fix up vintage myself) the new ones need to be honed anyhow, so it's not like you are avoiding that route by buying new.

Thank you for the information. I actually did not make up my mind about what kind of razor I will buy. I was planning to buy new from a known brand so that I can compare prices online. When it comes to used razors, I don't have enough information to know what to pay for what kind of a razor. There is a store in galleria which sells this razor (The Art of Shaving) but they are out of it. Do you know any antique stores that I can take a look at razor? I prefer a store which has staff who knows about these thing.

Sorry, wish I did, but I wasn't straight shaving when I lived in St. Louis. Too bad Schumate isn't still there.

The only way to find someone who actually knows about razors is someone who uses or used them. Good luck finding someone in a mall store like that! I suppose you could hit the old barber shops in town and try those fellows.

My grandpa knew an old barber iin Creve Couer who honed his razor for him, but that gentleman retired over 15 yrs. ago.

I think you should be OK if you get a razor with little hone wear, no frown, and little/no rust. I think you could get a great vintage here on the forums for pretty cheap, but then you can't handle it before buying...

As far as antique stores, any antique/junk shops in town or in the suburbs could have razors. I haven't slummed around in STL shops for years, so I can't give any recommendations.

There used to be a Remington Store at the Mall on St. Charles Rock Road. The Art of Shaving in the Galleria will be way expensive. There are really good .com's if you watch our banner and watch the BST section as well.

Antique stores are hit and miss, but always worth a look.

    Have fun,

I'm going to bump this thread a little...... although I know it is years old, someone new might appreciate the info:

Purtle Barber Supply in South St Louis City has some straights for sale, as well as strops. (5628 Gravois Ave, 314-352-2383). purtlesupply.com

Of course, "Art of Shaving" at West County Mall is another source, although prices are very high there.
