Thread: Old style traditional barber shops.. :(

So I live in Houston.. and I have yet been able to find a barbershop that I have been satisfied with.. Most of the barber shops here are full of thugs and I just don't like their atmospheres. There is one in the Sugar Land area called Christopher's Vintage Shave but he charges 25 to 35 a cut (I guess you have got to pay for a great barbershop experience.) Being a full time college student I don't have the time or money to go there.. =[ It just saddens me that a man can't go to a traditional barbershop anymore.. It drives me crazy that they use those darn disposable blades.. my great grandfather used to say (in spanish) "disposable blades are for disposable men." I guess its not sanitary to use a real straight razor now-a-days..

i dotn know where there are any good barbers anymore either, the last one i knew of was Bob baddie he still used a straight and had a marvolus collection of them in his shope untill it burnt down in 2004 so he called it quits and retired so now there is nobody around id go to so i end up being the barber for myself and a few of the neighbors that trust me.

There just isn't that much of a call for traditional shaving and even if a barber offered the service the amount of practice he got probably wouldn't keep him in tip top shape. Combine that with health codes and insurance issues and it's a recipe for do it yourself at home. There are a few out there who offer the service and are competent. We should probably have guys research in their own areas to see who offers shaving with a straight type blade and then make a list and then cull the competents from the not competents. It would be quite a project.

But it might be a fun project. There is a fellow in town who does straight shaves for $10. I haven't yet worked up the courage to let anyone else shave me, though.

You guys are more than welcome to stop at my shop here in midtown Detroit, I use traditional straights on request, mainly because upkeep can be time consuming.

I charge $25 for a cut and $20 for a shave because if I charged any less I couldn't make a living, remember barbering is a skilled trade and if you want true barbering services your paying for skill and knowledge just like you would with an electrician or plumber.

When I lived in Houston at the Texas Medical Center (the square mile with I don't recall how many hospitals) there used to be a barbershop across the road on the ground floor of a hotel. The barber was a carpark attendant as well. After a haircut he used to give my scalp a massage with a vibrating thingies strapped to his hands. Used to have straights with replaceable blades as well. Shop wasn't very hygeinic so I never took a shave from him. He was the cheapest in town so I put up with him for haircuts being a poor medical student.
