Thread: Razors now pulling

Ever since I moved from NE Oregon to Indiana, my straight razors have not shaved to the degree they did in Oregon. I am wondering if the mineral content of the water here has anything to do with it and if so, how can I overcome this problem. I really miss using my straight razors but right now they are almost unbearable. Thanks.

Could it be possible the edges just need a touch up?

Do you have hones? or some sort of CO/Diamond spray?

Buy some distilled (or de-ionized) water at the supermarket. Make your lather with that, and see if things improve.

If they don't, it's time to work on the edges.

It's good to try different things, but I would be shocked if switching from Indiana water to distilled water in your lather is going to remedy the problem of almost unbearable razors

Either the razors need to be rehoned, or they need a few dozen good lickin's on a razor-strap

You can blame that on the realignment of the planets. It has that affect on many things. They tell me putting it under a pyramid for a couple days makes it as right as rain. If that doesn't work try a hone.

i recommend a barber hone, if i had a bit more skill and felt comfortable in my honing ability on a barber hone id offer to do it for you but i just dont trust myself doing other peoples blades yet,

look at antique stores or ebay and try to track down a barber hone, put some lather on it and give your razor 5 laps and a good stropping and i would lay money on it they will be shaving smooth again.

My guess is something happened while in transit, possibly not secured or packaged correctly. Anyway, time for a touch up and then try playing with your lather. It would be a nice simple solution if it was your water/lather, but that's not the case. Lucky for you touch ups are a nice simple solution!

Yeah, I have to say, I'm falling on the side of razors probably need honing. Afterall, honemeisters are located in pretty much every state, even the ones with poor water quality I imagine. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, then sennd them out. Personally, I have well/spring water where I live in North-Central New York. It always seems to taste well enough and I think it's clean (I'm up on a hill). However, I once lived in Southern Illinois and that water was awful! So, maybe you're right, it might just be cruddy water.
