Thread: Changing blades/scales - devaluation?

I am beginning to collect razors with interesting scales but mediocre blades, and excellent blades with mediocre scales.
Is there any bias against combining interesting scales with excellent vintage blades? Will that significantly reduce the value of the razor? Assuming similar vintages, is there any way to tell whether or not the scales and the blade went together in the first place?
Would appreciate any insights you all might have.

Value is percieved so really I would say no, but if your a purist then yes. I wouldnt go around putting Puma scales on W&B's or DD's scales on Genco's or fili scales on well on anything! those would be Frankenrazors and may attract villagers with scruffy beards and poor hygiene....just saying.

Assuming similar vintages, is there any way to tell whether or not the scales and the blade went together in the first place? Yes any restorist worth their salt will know for sure many collectors will too

You really want to think hard before you pop original pins,, and that is coming from someone who does this everyday... Now if the razors in question are useless the way they sit then do whatever you want to them to get them back in shaving condition

My feeling is if a razor has some provenance which makes it really stand out it's best kept original. If it's just a common piece a beat up rusty razor is just that no matter if its a Puma or a Master.
