Well I'm going to at least sketch put a design first. If I don't like anything I will go that route.

    Hi TC,
Sorry about the delayed response but haven't been on the computer much since my knee replacement. The computer is on the second floor and haven't been up here much plus I think that I missed the notice of a reply on my iPhone.
i thought that you lived in Oakland, Tn. From your address in Oakland, I retrieved that from the list that Howard Clark's wife made when we were all up there, that would put you about 19 miles straight North of highway 72 in Mississippi which is the route that I take to Corinth. That straight line South from Oakland would put you about 1.5 miles East of Mt. Pleasant on Hiway 72. Is all of this right??????? I would love to come by and see you when I do come out. The 19 miles would not be that far out of the way just to see you. If you buy in an area near Corinth that would be cool then I could metal detect the area and maybe find something cool.
By the way it was really good seeing you again. I still think that I can take you LOL (private joke for those that don't know the story)

On the topic of visiting each other, since I live in Salina Kansas, we are in the middle both I-70 and 135, so most of you in traveling most likely have driven either by or through my town at some point. Hopefully I will have a shop eventually for people to come visit.

Yeah, I've been working on that same goal for a couple years now.

Ok thanks to the advice of several people I'm done with polishing. It's not perfect but it's good enough for me. The scales are a work in progress still. I drew up a few designs and am not sure what I'm going to do. Might hone it up and shave with it as a Kamisori just to see what it can do. The ironwood burl is calling me! One of the blanks in the first set broke going through the planer. Luckily I have a backup which I can stabilize first so they won't break. Thanks again Charlie!

Well i vote to forego the scales on this one. I like the way it is. I suggest a clip-on cover of Kydex or PVC.. Too bad you aren't here, I have a vacuum press.
You can do the same thing using 2 garden Kneeling mats and wood clamps. Since you are not doing many, single use items should work fine (unless you screw up and have to do it again).
The garden mats will actually last a while. Also the Kydex works better if you slowly preheat the oven and do a slow rise to temp. before you press it. Also better to spray non-stick on the blade before pressing the Kydex on.

Just a suggestion....but I would do it first because it is reversable (undoable..is that a word?)

Great job and best of luck.

While planing thin, a trick i learned (works with short pieces too) is to sand flat one sode and use double sised tape to a larger board.
