Ugh, one thing I didn't count on hitting all the antique shops looking for razors.... was finding vintage cast iron cookware... /cry

I'm resisting one shop that has a bunch of vintage Griswald pans... Ooooo I even saw an old crepe pan that was nice and heavy, super smooth... I seem to be getting myself in trouble here

Today I was just goofing around (laundry day) and found myself in a hardware store that had a HUGE selection Lodge cookware. There was a few pieces I actually considered getting... but where to put them ARRGGHHH!!!

Love cooking on cast iron and use it when ever I get the chance.

It's nice to someone else who likes to use cast iron. Everyone I know is either to "scared" or they don't want to deal with it. I think they are easier to work with than some non-sticks! I just aquired a nice one from my wife's grandmother who, unfortunately passed. But the pan is about 60 years old, if not older, that is as smooth as can be, and cooks better than any of the new ones you can buy.

I find the new lodge pre seasoned ones a bit easier to deal with, but they still take forever to get just right...

I have a super cheapie fajita pan my wife got me for Christmas, Tabasco , and it took over a year of use before it filled in all the pores, now it's fantastic... But oh the time spent...

Uploaded a few CI Pans, I've been on the look out for historic CI pans lately. Pans with identifiers, Tobasco, USN, and the like. Still have a few styles I just don't have yet and sence they are elusive I have fun searching for them.

With Tanksgiving almost here I find myself seasoning yet another 6qt dutch oven. This one is a "Camp" style with a lipped lid for coals and has 3 legs under it. I had mentioned one day in passing that I really liked the old dutch ovens for camping... next thing I knew I had one in the mail HAHA.. Now this bugger is a bit shorter than a Lodge but seems to be ok in construction. Hope it doesn't take a year to get a good season on it

I'm doing most of my dishes this year in CI as I'm doing an 1850's style dinner. Granted many things where now available at this time so it's not very restricting food wise. But it does feel good using cast iron cookware for it all. Plus NO PRE PROCESSED items... It's all from scratch

I used to use peanut oil to season my cast iron, heck I have gallons of the stuff available... But I just started using Lard because I can keep it in the fridge and not worry about the plastic bottle developing a leak and such. I've also just noticed that the lard seems to give me less fits as to coverage, and consistency in the seasoning smell. Lard doesn't smell as strong to me.

What do others use to season there Cast Iron with???

I'm addicted to cooking with cast iron as well. I season my pans with vegetable shortening and it works really well. Except I have one Lodge dutch oven I don't season as I use it to bake bread in and it has seems to like to burn the crust if I season it too often.
