Great post. I was just talking about the Norton 4000/8000 in a PM from a newer person tonight and I had this rhetorical question:.............IF the Norton 4000/8000 stone was twice the price it can be had for now......would it still be the "benchmark" stone? Keep in mind, at twice the price it would cost the same or higher than the Shapton 4000 and 8000 grit ceramic on glass plates (no soaking required, purported to be more uniform in grit, etc).

I'm not trying to start something here, I'm just asking a legitimate question. I ask that question because I do absolutely think the Norton 4000/8000 is a combo stone at that price point that I don't think can be beat. I really do think though, if it was twice the price it would not as popular and others maybe would be?

The combo stone will be used up twice as quickly as a 4k stone and an 8k stone sold separately, so I doubt it is as much about the value as it is the amount people want to spend in one shot. If the price doubled, the demand for it would probably halve as long as the alternatives remain the same price

I just want to say how much I appreciate the information in this thread and on this site in general. It gives a relative newcomer like me the benefit of years of collective experience. I have been wanting to take the honing plunge for a while, but I've been too nervous about screwing up my razors. This was an unpleasant exchange, but it was constructive, at least for me. Thanks again. (Btw, I'm buying a Norton.)
