DMT Coarse Dia-Sharp Diamond Hone, DMT-D6C
DMT Coarse Dia-Sharp Diamond Hone, DMT-D6C
Some stats about this hone:
• continuous diamond surface
• 325 grit Monocrystalline diamonds
• bonded in nickel, and then electroplated onto a solid stainless steel plate
• 6" x 2" 325 mesh sharpening surface
When I received this in the mail the first thing I noticed before I even took it out of the mailing package was the weight. It is heavy. Removing it from the box my suspicions where confirmed. This is no flimsy tool.
Touching the surface revealed a relatively smooth surface that belied its honing prowess. The first task it was put to was lapping an old hone I got from my father. This thing was in bad shape and useless the way it was. It did not take long for the D6 to pulverize (literally) the surface of that old stone and leave smooth and flat. This was the primary reason I bought the D6, as a lapping tool for my hones. It did not disappoint.
Next was my Carborundum 116s. These little hones are known for their hardness and I was a little concerned at first that I might damage the D6. My worries where quickly swatted away as this hone too was left smooth and flat.
I had some razors that where in bad shape with chips in the edge or frowns. The ability for the D6 to remove steel is something that cannot be taken lightly. It will take you where you want to go fast, maybe a little too fast. One could easily take too much metal off using this particular grit. Use it sparingly and carefully if you choose to take steel to it.
One this that I noticed is that the hone did load up with material quickly and required regular rinsing while in use. I didn’t find that as too much of a negative. It does force you to keep your work surface clean and that’s a good thing.
Overall, I find the DMT-D6c to be an irreplaceable tool in my box of tricks for restoring hones and razors. I recommend in wholeheartedly.
