Thread: Oil Stone Turkey

i just got this and will test 1 st one. lets see how it will act.
Turkey stones are varies a lot on quality this is just guess. i know colors does.

Sham, how are the turkey oil stones you have working out for honing razors? Are they finishers? If so, how do they compare to your better finishers like your brown escher, nakayamas, etc.

i am in early stage to test them. So far i would say i wouldn't put them in same level with Nakayama or escher.
they will cut faster a lot faster and drink darn oil alot.

Hoy...im going to have to start working overtime to get more money for stones.

The two I have vary in their honing characteristics.
The stone in my 2nd post is smooth and a slow cutter very much like a translucent arkansas.
The stone in the 1st post is a little coarser and faster cutter.

Do you sharpen razors?

I dont sharpen razors but i sharpen chisels and filleting knives razor sharp!
These stones give fine edges then I use a charged leather strop to finish.

The surface mottling of that stone is quite distinctive. I'm going to look through my collection as it looks familiar. I was reading a book recently that said they used oil on the hones as it made them harder.

Anybody have any idea why these are called "Turkey" stones? Is it named after the bird, or the country? I'm guessing the country, since I don't believe turkeys exist outside the US. If the country, are they similar to some native stone of Turkey, or do they actually originate there?

We have Turkey for Christmas dinner in the UK. We used to eat goose, but adopted the Turkey in recent history.
I'm pretty sure the stones were got from Turkey.
