    Question Blue stone???

    Hello.
I am new in the razors, this is my first message, I don't know if someone made this question before, though I believe that it's very specific.
I found in my house, in a box of my grandfather, a stone, i think it's for sharpening, of blue color with the inscription in a paper stuck in one of the sides that says:

(A image with one lion on a "R" into a circle)
    RAPPOLD (the "O" is red)
    RAPORID
    MONOPOL
    WETZER
    Villach/Austria

Someone can say if this stone can sharpen razors and of that type is?
    Thanks, regards. Stefano.

Rappold from Villach is now part of Winterthur (compare logo bottom right). About your specific hone: sorry, not a clue Have you got any pictures?

Looks like a scythe stone such as these here. If that is what you have then it would probably be a bit too coarse for a razor's edge.

    Yup,

Scythe stone. The shape is a give-away and the lable shows a picture of a scythe blade. I think most who used them, carried the stones in a back pocket so they could be easily grasped when needed to touch up the grass or grain cutter's edge, hence the un-square cornered shape to help keep the pocket of one's overalls from being shredded.

Send me a picture and I'll compare it to type examples in my hone collection. If it's blue and from that part of the world, it probably is a belgian blue which is a 4000 grit hone that works fast. Wet it and look at it with a magnifier. If you see evenly dispersed reddish dots, that would support it being a belgian blue. You can get a really nice edge on one and it's what I use for my kitchen knives as well as for razors that have gotten a little too dull for a coticule.

That looks like a synthetic hone to me. The color doesn't look right for a Belgian blue.

I have a Carborundum hone with a similar shape. I had no idea it was for scythes, so thanks guys!

Now, I just gotta get me a scythe!
