Thread: Honyama Stone

Hi all. I came across one of the StraightRazorPlace fourms when doing a search for sharpening stones. I have what was called a Honyama stone when I bought it in 1990 from Hida Tool in Berkely, Ca. It is quite large at 35mm x 75mm x 225mm and feels very hard campaired to some of my other natural stones. It has a Urushi coating on the sides and back that was done in Japan after I bought it. (notice the red stamps) I have never really used it and have no idea what it's worth. Any Help ? Thanks...Greg

No one can tell you what the stone is worth.
It can be superb stone , it could be average stone it has to be tested by experienced user to determine which is it.
In general we also do not give price estimates on the forum.

My advice is to compare against synthetic grit stones to compare the level of finish and how aggressively it cuts, this will give you some idea what is the grit range of the stone.
There are a few people that might be able to help you determine the quality, let me know if interested and I'll give you details.

When I was buying stones there the elder gentlman gave me close to good info (he has a strong accent ) on the stones I bought there. See if he can give you any more info on the stone, tell him what your using it for.
